NSO (Nature Speaks Organization) is a design and ecology based outreach program that empowers communities to protect forests and their workers through ritual, education, and creative actions. We would host annual gatherings in Yellowwood State Forest where participants create symbolic “carbon price tags” from invasive plant material, learn about carbon sequestration calculations, and engage in public acts of care. Our work transforms overlooked materials into tools for awareness and policy change, encouraging a culture of slow and symbolic activism while also fundraising for the parks so that logging isn’t always necessary.

Material Testing

Japanese Knotweed, an invasive plant similar to bamboo, is collected from Indiana forests. The knotweed stalks are first soaked in water for 5 days. The stalks are boiled for 6-8 hours with sodium carbonate to soften the tough fibers. They were then blended and further broken up.

Making the Paper

The extracted fibers were then mixed with a filler made from recycled paper. Using a mould and deckle, the pulp was then arranged in a rectangle and dried to create the paper used in our organization’s activities.

Carbon Sequestration Tags

We then cut these papers to be in the form of carbon sequestration tags. The Carbon Walk invites community members to learn how much carbon is sequestered in a tree of their choosing. The amount is written on a Bio Paper price tag. It promotes talking about the environmental impact of a tree rather than it’s economic impact.

Web Design

This website serves as a central hub for NSO — Nature Speaks Organization — where people can learn about our mission, explore past and upcoming events, and RSVP to join our annual forest gatherings. It highlights the hands-on work we encourage community members in Yellowwood State Forest to do, shares the story behind our symbolic “carbon price tag” actions, and invites deeper engagement through handmade materials, educational tools, and community ritual. The site helps us connect with new audiences, organize our events, and spread our message of slow, rooted activism within but also beyond the forest. https://www.figma.com/proto/orD34vv0kN7zDeEy7DPFQe/ns.org?page-id=0%3A1&node-id=2-3&starting-point-node-id=2%3A3&t=nlLwftJrSRin43BW-1
